STS member and cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Bryan Whitson was part of the surgical team who performed the first lung-kidney transplant for the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Before the April surgery, there had been only 37 lung-kidney transplants since 1995, and none in Ohio, according to data from the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network.

The surgery took about 10 hours. Dr. Whitson transplanted the lung through an incision on patient Scott Hamilton's side, and when that went well, Dr. Ashraf El-Hinnawi replaced the kidney though the front. “There were a lot of moving parts,” Dr. Whitson said.
