The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) is proud to participate in the first-ever National Heart Valve Disease Awareness Day. As an official partner of the Alliance for Aging Research, STS joined the effort to call on the US Department of Health and Human Services to include an annual National Heart Valve Disease Awareness Day, beginning February 22, 2017, on its National Health Observances Calendar.
More than 5 million Americans have heart valve disease (HVD), which can cause heart attacks, arrhythmia, congestive heart failure, and other heart disease—significantly impacting quality of life and even leading to death. The good news is that most HVD can be successfully treated in patients of all ages. Unfortunately, awareness about HVD is low. A recent survey found that 40% of adults know nothing about HVD, and only 1 in 4 know somewhat or a great deal about HVD. This is why an awareness day dedicated to heart valve disease is so important.
